Who are the Houthis (Hoothees) and why do they want to kill Americans and Jews?

On Sunday, November 19, 2023, Yemen’s Houthis rebels seized an Israeli cargo ship in the Red Sea and warned that all vessels linked to Israel “will become legitimate target for armed forces.”

Yemen is a country in West Asia located in the southern end of the Arabian Pennisula and borders Saudia Arabia to the north and Oman to the northeast. It shares maritime borders with Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia. The capital of Yemen is the city of Sanaa. Sanaa is 1,729 miles from Jerusalem. Yemen’s population is approximately 35 million people who are 99% Islamists. 65% are Sunni, and 35% Shia Muslims.

Houthi forces have pledged that they would, “continue to carry out military operations against their Israeli enemy until the aggression in Gaza stops and the ugly crimes…against our Palestinian brothers in Gaza, and the West Bank stop,” said Yahya Sare’e, a spokesperson for the group. Chief negotiator for the Houthis, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, stated that the Israelis only understand “the language of force.” He added that “this is the beginning.”

The Houthi Movement, officially called, Ansar Allah (Supporters of God), is an Islamist political and military organization that emerged in the early 2000s during a religious revivalist event in northern Yemen. A charismatic leader, Hussein al-Houthi, had studied in Iran and began preaching sermons throughout the region. These sermons formed a collection of fiery rhetoric that promoted the ideology of the Movement. Al-Houthi was killed in 2004 during an uprising against Yemen’s government. His collected sermons continued to serve as a guide for the Houthi followers. Their slogan is “God is great, death to Americans, death to Israel, curse the Jews, and victory for Islam.”  – it is now the Houthis trademark.

Houthis are predominantly Zaidi Shia Muslims. Zaydism is a sub-sect of Shia Islam that emerged in the eighth century. Zaydis do not believe in the infallibility of Imams and do not ascribe them with any supernatural qualities. Theologically, Zaydis have a unique perspective on the nature of Allah. They believe that there are 99 attributes of Allah (God) in Islam, and Allah transcends them all. Zaydis believe that the leader of the Muslim community must be descendants of Muhammed through his only surviving daughter, Fatimah.

Yemen has long been one of the poorest countries in the Middle East. It is now undergoing a humanitarian crisis. The Houthis rebels have been fighting the government for over eight years. Yemen’s economy has been devastated and it has led to a severe food insecurity. The Nation’s infrastructure has been destroyed. Approximately 18 million Yemenis are without safe water and sanitation.

While the Nation of Yemen (99% Islamists) struggles to survive, the Yemen rebels are attacking Israel, proclaiming “Death to Israel. Death to America, Curse the Jews, and Victory for Islam.
