Hezbollah – “Party of God” is a Lebanese Shia Islamist political party and militant group. The party was established in 1982 during the Lebanon War by Lebanese clerics. The clerics had studied in Najaf, Iraq. Najaf is considered one of the holiest cities of Shia Islam, and the center of Shia political power in Iraq. Legend states that it is the burial place of Muhammed’s son-in-law and cousin, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib.
Najaf possesses the largest cemetery in the world, Wadi-us-Salaam. It is a major pilgrimage destination for Shia Muslims.

Shia followers believe that the Islamic prophet Muhammed designated Ali ibn Abi Talib as his successor and the Imam (spiritual and political leader) after him. The event took place at Ghadir Khumm (a gathering of Muslims to hear the sermon of Muhammed), during Muhammed’s farewell pilgrimage in 632AD.

Hezbollah is headquartered in Beirut, Lebanon. In 2021, Hassan Nasrallah, a Lebanese cleric and the secretary-general of Hezbollah, reported that Hezbollah had 100,000 fighters.
From the founding of Hezbollah, the elimination of Israel has been one of their primary goals. Hezbollah’s 1985 Arabic-language manifesto reported, “our struggle will end only when the entity (Israel) is obliterated.”
Hezbollah’s Deputy-General, Naim Qassem announced that, “the struggle against Israel is a core belief of Hezbollah and the central rationale of Hezbollah’s existence.”
Hezbollah’s propaganda for holy war promotes the vilification of Jews as “Enemies of mankind, conspiratorial, obstinate, and conceited adversaries full of satanic plans to enslave the Arabs.”
The leaders of Hezbollah are closely aligned with Iran. They recognize the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, as the ultimate clerical authority of Hezbollah. They appeal to him for guidance and directives in cases when Hezbollah’s leadership is divided over issues and are unable to reach a consensus.
Funding for training, weapons, explosives and organizational aid comes from the governments of Iran and Syria, and Lebanese business groups.

Hezbollah’s arsenal of weapons – Reuters, has reported that Hezbollah has superior military power when compared to many countries. Their reporting included over 100,000 rockets, while some estimates put the figure at closer to 150,000. Weapons supplied by Iran include unguided and short-range rockets and advanced long-range missiles that may be able to strike anywhere in Israel.
Most of the short-range rockets are Soviet style “Katusha” missiles capable of traveling up to 19 miles and may be fired from a multiple rocket launcher system.
More powerful missiles like the Iranian-made Raad, Fajr and Zilzal, can strike at longer distances.
Israeli sources estimate that Hezbollah’s long-range missile, the Fateh-110, can travel more than 186 miles.
